Under the Ginfluence 002 | Three Tiers for Christmas

Another month, another lockdown, another G&T…

Just like that, it’s nearly Christmas. And not just any Christmas- Christmas in 2020. It was never going to be normal! Placed under another national lockdown, with nothing but tiered restrictions to look forward to after the 2nd, we find ourselves lifting the long-closed shutters of our DIY home bars, ordering pints to takeaway and deciding just how many bottles of gin we’re going to need to see us through it. Answer: quite a few. This year’s will be a festive season like never before, and it’s more important than ever to shop small and support local.

We had a few glorious months of almost-normal: pubs were open, everyone went back to work and school, we ate out and helped out. But, in classic 2020 style, we find ourselves under restrictions, once again. The strange times have crept back around, like the ghost of Christmas past. Even though November is at an end, and Christmas now just round the corner, it just doesn’t feel the same this year. Of course it doesn’t- nothing about this year feels remotely normal. As a nation we’ve been bombarded with news, rules, restrictions, facts and figures for what seems like forever now. It’s easy to get lost in the feeling that nothing is under your control anymore, with ‘the current situation’ becoming more of a permanent situation, especially as lockdown ends and 55million of us are placed under even more restrictions (hello, Tier 3). In times like these it’s often hard to visualise what life will be like after this is all over. Which is why, here at Burleighs, we want to keep things simple- which to us, means making and enjoying top quality gin, no matter what’s going on around us. After all, it’s the simple things in life that often bring the most joy, and it’s important to take time to truly appreciate them. A Burleighs Gin and Tonic, for example. As simple as mixing one thing with the other. The simple decision to shop local this year and support local businesses; simple, but so important. This blog post is going to feature some simple ways to enjoy Burleighs Gin over the coming weeks. Whether it’s festive gifting ideas or cocktail recipes, these tips will focus on keeping it simple in a world where everything seems very, very complicated.

RECIPE #1: Burleighs Hot Toddy

Simple, underrated and delicious, this is one of my favourite ways to enjoy Burleighs. Traditionally made with Whisky, the Hot Toddy is the ultimate festive warmer- and great if you’ve got a cold! Although the idea of a Gin Hot Toddy may seem a little strange, it’s the perfect way to relax after a long day. They are really easy to make, too. All you’ll need is:

35ml Burleighs Distiller’s Cut (or more depending how strong you like it!)

1tsp honey

150ml hot water

1 cinammon stick

A sprinkle of cloves

A decent wedge of fresh orange

Simply combine all the ingredients in a glass, stir well and garnish with the orange, cinnamon and cloves. The warmth of cloves and cinnamon perfectly compliment the gin, and the fresh orange gives it a lovely refreshing finish.

RECIPE #2: ‘A Latte Gin’ Martini

This one is undeniably indulgent, but with only 4 ingredients it’s a simple fix for those sweet tooth Christmas cravings. And it involves Baileys- what more could you want? You’ll need a cocktail shaker for this one, but a protein shaker/sports bottle can work just as well!

25ml Burleighs Signature Gin

25ml coffee liqueur

25ml freshly brewed espresso

25ml Baileys

Fill your shaker with ice and add the ingredients. Shake for at least 20secs, or until the shaker frosts over. Strain the cocktail into a martini glass and for an extra touch, dust with cocoa powder. Simple, delicious, and such a treat.

RECIPE #3: A Christmas G&T

The simplest recipe, two quality ingredients, one amazing Gin and Tonic. When it comes to making G&Ts at home, use a big glass with lots of room for ice. The garnishes for this serve are particularly festive, but garnish with whatever you prefer.

60ml Burleighs Christmas Gin

120ml Indian Tonic water

Garnish with dried orange peel, a cinnamon stick and star anise.

Fill your glass with ice, pour in the gin and top up with the tonic. Stir once to lift the gin through the glass, garnish, and take a moment to enjoy. Our brand new Christmas Gin makes for a deliciously festive tipple, and really does make you wish it could be Christmas every day.

At Burleighs, we’ve been thinking about Christmas since about June. In what has been possibly the most challenging year to date, Christmas has seemed like the light (or fairy lights) at the end of the tunnel, the silver lining to the big grey cloud that has been 2020. So, here is a quick guide to what we’ve got on offer over the festive season, from our Limited Edition Christmas Gin to virtual, gin-fuelled Zoom parties!

It goes without saying that our Christmas Gin has lifted our spirits (pun not intended) around the distillery. It makes us proud to know that in a year as challenging as this one, nothing can stop us from crafting exciting, authentic gin to be enjoyed across the country. From recipe development right through to bottling by hand, producing the Christmas Gin has got us all feeling like little elves, knowing that when we send it out into the world, it’ll put a smile on someone’s face. The gin is distilled with dried cranberries, and traditional winter spices (cinnamon, cloves), giving it a classically festive feel. As a small-batch distillery, we’ve done a limited run of this gin, and have proudly produced 1000 bottles. Get your hands on some now.

We’ve also made sure to cater for the ever-increasing number of at-home bartenders and mixologists, and are now offering Home Bar Kitsas part of the Burleighs merchandise range. This includes Burleighs branded barware and two beautiful Burleighs Glasses- perfect for your G&Ts and great additions to your home bar. Take a look and treat yourself this Christmas.

As for stocking fillers, we’ve got you covered! Our Burleighs Miniature Setsare the perfect gift for someone special and start at just £16.00. A simple way to let someone know that they’re loved (and that you’ve got great taste in gin).

One of the staples of Christmas, the Work Christmas Party, is of course, off the cards this year. But, here at Burleighs, we can’t stand the thought of people not being able to celebrate together when they deserve it more than ever. That’s why we’ve created the Burleighs Virtual Gin-mas Party: an online, gin-fuelled get together, featuring gin tasting, cocktail masterclasses, quizzes… not your usual Christmas Party but under the circumstances, it comes pretty close! And what better way to toast to the new year than with a glass (or two) of Burleighs.

It’s all too easy to get overwhelmed during these winter months, especially with restrictions and rules in place for the foreseeable future. We hope that, in reading this blog, you’ve been reminded that it really is the simple things that matter the most. Often, it’s not about the gift being given, but about the simple act of giving itself. So go ahead, make that cocktail and share it with your favourite person. Buy that bottle of Burleighs they’ve been wanting for so long. In giving good things to others, we receive nothing but good things back- and sometimes, it’s as simple as a smile.
