Under the Ginfluence 005 | A Marilyn Moment
Remembering an icon.
This month, we’re celebrating what would have been Marilyn Monroe’s 95th birthday. Born on 1st June 1926, Marilyn rose to fame in the 1950s as her acting and modelling career took off. The definition of ‘blonde bombshell’, her style, talent and beauty quickly secured her status as a global icon. She’s a household name- one of those select few superstars whose influence remains timeless. It’s hard to comprehend that level of fame, and even harder to write about! There are only so many times you can use the word ‘icon’, but that’s exactly what Marilyn was. I’m sure we all think of the same things when we think about Marilyn- blonde hair, Hollywood glamour, maybe that white dress, maybe that pink dress, the ‘Marilyn Moment’… the list goes on. And perhaps ‘gin’ doesn’t make an appearance on this list. Or at least it didn’t, until we made one.
We first distilled our Marilyn Monroe Gin back in 2019, after securing a deal with the Marilyn Monroe estate to create the world’s first Marilyn-inspired gin. In one of our boldest collaborations yet, we crafted a gin that paid a perfect homage to one of Hollywood’s biggest and most beautiful heroes. Inspired by the icon and fuelled by the same botanicals found in Burleighs Pink Edition Gin, this gin combines sweet, delicate floral flavours with the zesty freshness of pink grapefruit. Backed up by the classic flavour of juniper, the gin is a new take on an old classic, and our very own Marilyn Moment. To make it extra special- and a little bit more Marilyn- we colour the gin post-distillation, all naturally, with hibiscus flowers. Not only does this transform the crystal-clear gin into a beautiful shade of pink, it also adds a layer of sharp, tangy sweetness.
Perfectly balanced, perfectly pink, and definitely perfect for Marilyn, we’re proud to distil the world’s first Marilyn Monroe Gin. Some of you might wonder what linked this global superstar to a craft gin distillery in the middle of Leicestershire in the first place- it’s not like Marilyn was known for her escapades around Charnwood Forest! It’s simple. Just like our other collaborative gins, we wanted to explore what would happen if we combined what we do best (making gin!), with what others do best (playing football, playing rugby, being Marilyn Monroe). We were, and still are, inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s impact on the world. She represents a kind of timeless beauty and glamour that anyone would struggle to replicate- but we thought we’d give it a good go.
The Marilyn Monroe Gin is an absolute treat for those of you who love a floral, refreshing drink. Great in G&Ts and even better in a cocktail, this Burleighs creation will hit the spot every time. To celebrate her birthday in true Burleighs style, we’ve come up with three delicious cocktails where the star of the show is of course, the gin! When creating these recipes, we wanted to focus on making something special- a drink fit for an icon. The gin makes this easy. The three recipes are all inspired by elements of the gin itself: gentle florals and zesty, vibrant citrus both appear in each of the cocktails. We also wanted elements of Marilyn- pink colours, beautiful garnishes and of course, Champagne! Most of all, we wanted to create cocktails that didn’t just look and taste special, but felt special. Because after all, that’s what the Marilyn Moment is all about- taking the time to celebrate yourself, just because you can! With these cocktails, we take the Marilyn Moment, and make it drinkable…
